Coronavirus - a type of virus that can cause respiratory problems in animals, including humans - MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) were also coronaviruses - they are also known MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-1, respectively
A 'novel coronavirus (nCoV)' is a "new" strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans - '2019-NCoV' was the original name given to the Wuhan novel coronavirus - I think this only refers to the Wuhan variant of this virus SARS-CoV-2 - the new coronavirus that is causing the COVID-19 disease - this is the virus that researchers are studying, looking at for detection, vaccination and treatment - it is a different virus from SARS-CoV-1, but has similar disease symptoms COVID-19 - the corona virus 2019 disease that is caused by SARS-CoV-2 and which governments are trying to control, and people are hoping to not come down with - you can carry the SARS-CoV-2 virus in your body without coming down with the COVID-19 disease - the 2019 pandemic statistics are all for the COVID-19 disease. Most publishers seem to prefer upper case "COVID-19", some prefer "Covid-19" -- I do not know how they decide. Pandemic & Epidemic - a 'pandemic' is when a disease become widely prevalent across a country or multiple countries - note that nowadays, the preference is to use 'pandemic' for multiple country disease outbreaks, and to use 'epidemic' for single country or country sub-region outbreaks - the MERS outbreak is considered an epidemic, whereas the two SARS outbreaks were considered pandemics |
